HECO will also spend $200 million to install more than 100 miles of new overhead power lines covered in special insulation in fire-prone areas through 2027. It will spend more on that effort than any other wildfire prevention measure in the next three years, according to Ching’s briefing.

HECO says the number one priority for the past fifteen months has been reducing the risk of another catastrophic fire. This month Hawaiian Electric Industries formalized a $2 billion agreement to settle damage claims from the wildfire that razed the historic town of Lahaina and killed more that 100 people.
